The Second Chance is a suspenseful tale of kidnapping, corporate espionage, and forgotten love that takes the listener from the red dirt roads of Alabama to the silver mines of Mexico.
A deadly mine cave-in at Real de Catorce, Mexico, changes Patricia Morelos' life forever. The disaster she faces as owner of the mine is overshadowed by personal tragedy. Her only child, 17-year-old Max, is kidnapped when he goes to help the victims. Desperate to reach her son, who is somewhere in the San Luiz Potosi Mountains, Patricia turns to her late husband's stepbrother, Miguel Ramirez, whom she once loved but now fears and distrusts. With Miguel, Patricia sets out on her journey of discovery, danger, and confession. Pursued, shot at, conspired against, and abetted by her blind friend and a lost love, Patricia confronts the secrets of her past along her treacherous journey and finds not one miracle but two.

This plot-driven tale is a wild ride--as action-oriented as the cover of the book. The author has done her homework (and her heart work, too) as her protagonist pursues her heart's desire across the continent. From the most humble of beginnings, Patricia Morelos learns that fear is just another four-letter word. The story celebrates strong women and macho men and the spontaneous combustion that happens when they clash. One miracle is nice, but a second is phenomenal.Product details

The Second Chance (Audible Audio Edition) Linda Rainwater Stephanie Brush Books in Motion Books Reviews
I enjoyed the book very much! The life of Patricia Morales unwinds a suspense filled mystery of one woman's remarkable struggle from the adversities of poverty to fortune and power. It forbids abandonment until the missing pieces, unknown even to her, are revealed. A great cliff hanger, graphically depicting characters, locales, and a devoted friendship, which draws the reader deep into the web of events. Also an inspirational read, exemplifying strength, courage, fortitude and life values. Expect more great tales from this new author.
Move over, Mary Higgins Clark and Danielle Steele -- there's a new woman on the block and her name is Linda Rainwater. On a cold, rainy weekend I was transported mind and spirit to exotic, dangerous Mexico. This story of Patricia Morales searching for her son becomes that of a woman searching for herself and her future, all the while wrestling and coming to terms with her past. And as if that weren't enough, Rainwater's lyrical way with words makes this music for the eyes and heart. I am already looking forward to what this new writer has for us next.
Linda Rainwater may be a fresh new author but she is obviously a seasoned storyteller at heart. The plot moves along with plenty of twists and turns to keep any mystery reader engrossed. The characters are so well defined that toward the end of the book you almost know what they are thinking before the words appear on the page. This is one of those rare reads that makes you feel part of the story not just an observer.
Great book by a wonderful storyteller!
THE SECOND MILAGRO is not just a story about miracles. Rather, it is about how the courage and perseverance of Patricia Morelos help make miracles come true. Not many women would be able to stand up to the corrupt officials and the outright enemies that Patricia has to outwit. Few will experience the devotion of a friend like that of the intrepid, blind Rachel. Some of the real surprises in this book are the flashbacks to Patricia's early life in Alabama where we learn what made her so tough, and later, her meteoric rise in her husband's empire. The dialogue is so real that whether you are in a diner in Talladega, AL., or a board meeting in Mexico, the words ring true. The book also brings to life the history and culture of Mexico in such a way that they are an integral and necessary part of the story. The twists and turns of the journey Patricia and Rachel take into the ancient city of Real de Catorce keep the reader turning the pages quickly. We all want to know, "What is the 'second' milagro?"
Linda Rainwater has skillfully created a distinctive page-turner. There are passages of The Second Milagro reminiscent of best-selling author Dan Brown's novels. Furthermore, the comprehensive research in the narrative brought it alive with vivid images of the locations in Real de Catorce, Mexico, as well as Washington D.C. and Alabama. Expert characterization allows the reader to befriend and become a part in the lives of interesting and intriguing personalities. Rainwater's work functions not just as entertainment, but it serves as a learning experience as well. I'm looking forward to her next publication.
A very entertaining and, ultimately, deeply moving novel about the complex life-web which links a "Silver Magnolia" to her past, present and future. The main character, Patricia Morales, is truly believable...her dedication to the important people in her life is inspirational. When one reads this novel, one feels the heat of an Alabama summer and tastes the fragrant air of Mexico during festival. Rainwater is a master of descriptive writing. This reader anticipates a sequel and looks forward to more of Rainwater's work.
This is not only an exquisitely written book filled with spot-on dialogue -- it has a highly cinematic sensibility and would translate well to cinema. They say there is a scarcity of strong, well-developed roles for women in film; well, here, in Patricia Morelos, is one that is most definitely Oscar caliber. I had the privilege of meeting the writer at a conference recently and, like everyone else in the group, was stunned by her abilities as a writer and born ranconteur. (Linda is also an amazing painter as well!) It is quite difficult for a writer to create such an intricate, tightly woven plot that flows organically and Linda has done it here. The vivid descriptions of Mexico make the reader feel as though they are really on this journey along with the characters. I look forward to reading Linda's next book; she's a natural, easily on par with or above many of the top novelists writing today.
