The Man With A Microphone In His Ear eBook Arthur Smukler
Is truth stranger than Fiction? I think this is answered in "The Man With A Microphone In His Ear". This novella is extremely well written. It grips you with a real life adventure in Doctor Smukler's residency. All the anxiety of a new resident, and the gradually increasing interest and joy of discovery of psychiatric pathology. It illustrates how kindness and empathy affects the most troubled patient. It also illustrates the fact, that a fixed delusion can remain even with medication, reality testing, interpretation and confrontation. I thoroughly enjoyed Dr. Smukler's work and look forward to more of the same.Edwin Caine M.D., Psychiatrist

The Man With A Microphone In His Ear eBook Arthur Smukler Reviews
I tried to just read a little...and I ended up finishing your story!
This should be required reading for all incoming psych residents! It is really touching and paints a true picture of the psych wards we all knew and loved back in the day.
You combined the scary reality of paranoia with the human being who had to live through the experience and the new doc who could find his own scared kid inside. I loved the connection with the nurse, too.
Very intriguing short story; I just wish there was more to read. It would have been great if there were several stories of Dr. Smuckler's experiences in one book. Overall, it captured my attention and I enjoyed getting a brief glimpse inside of the mind of a psychiatrist and his patient. You can really feel the connection and relationship between this first year resident and his client. Like the previous review, I too hope you will write again and give us more.
Dr. Smukler has wet our appetites with this short tale. I would love to read more stories like this one. Very engaging and approachable by a layperson, i just wish there was more. The only part that stood out as odd was the very ending piece about "Tony". I had to reread this portion because it was such an abrupt left turn. I understood Dr. Smukler's point, however, the transition was very abrupt and did not flow with the book at all. Otherwise, an outstanding read. Give us MORE please.
The Man With A Microphone In His Ear is more than just a novella about a vulnerable and compassionate first year psychiatric resident who finds himself paired up with an intricate and intimidating patient; it is a story about the human connection. Not only is it a compelling story, it is informative and touching. I am left wanting Arthur Smukler to write more. I connected to this first year psychiatric resident and I want to know more about him and his patients.
I really enjoyed reading this case study. The writer's style is engaging and easy to read; successfully explaining a complex pyschological condition and treatment of same so that the lay reader can not only understand it, but not feel condescended to in the process. The epiphany the doctor experienced which allowed him to approach, befriend, and ultimately control Jerome's condition is something all too human that most other doctors would do well to adopt in this age of assembly-line, impersonal medical care.
I hope that Dr. Smuckler will consider assembling a collection of various interesting case studies in the future. I feel sure that, if promoted properly, it would a a runaway bestseller.
This is a wonderful, well written story. It demonstrates how becoming a good doctor (psychiatrist) involves not only knowledge, but the courage, time, and interest to enter a patient's world in order to more fully understand him. Dr. Smukler is to be commended for his clear and descriptive characterization of paranoia, but even more so for the humanity he demonstrated in helping his patient.
enjoyable and interesting
